NEWS : 85 YEARS OF MARVEL COMICS AND MORE

21-08-24 | Happy Birthday, Marvel Comics! Few people could have imagined that Timely Comics (as it was called in 1939) would still be around nearly a century after its inception. Lucky old Stan Lee was there from the early days and got to see Marvel become a worldwide cinematic phenomenon during the early 2000s. But it’s the comics that started it all! And long may they thrive! Check out these upcoming Marvel titles, plus others you can’t afford to miss. All of them are out next week.

MARVEL 85TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL

Over eight decades have passed since the release of Marvel Comics #1. And to celebrate the House of Ideas releases this 72 page anthology featuring Wolverine, Spider-Man and other fan favourites. The linking device, an epic Marvel museum in the far future, is sure to exhibit many nods to the past.

ALIENS VS. AVENGERS #1

Since the merger of Disney and 20th Century Fox, Marvel has experimented with adapting Fox’s cult franchises. The Avengers take on the scary Xenomorphs in this latest science fiction yarn, which sees the Marvel Heroes (gasp!) abandoning planet Earth when the dreaded aliens prove too much for them.

FRANKENSTEIN #1

Probably the most highly anticipated title of the Universal Monsters revival. Artist Michael Walsh reimagines the classic 1931 Frankenstein with action and sensitivity in equal amounts. The cover is simply stunning! A tragic tale of monsters unlike any other, Frankenstein is bound to be a must-read.

BRZRKR : THE LOST BOOK OF B

Rather than commit to a rushed series, BOOM! Studios is releasing the BRZRKR range one standalone book at a time. Series creator Keanu Reeves returns to unveil fragments of B’s secret origins, as the immortal warrior joins Genghis Khan’s army of death. This series just keeps getting better and better!

CONVERT #1

Prepare yourself for another Image graphic novel of the highest standard. Astronaut Orrin is stranded on an alien world, haunted by the spectres of his fallen crewmembers. Though the primitive lifeforms on the planet are dangerous, they possess the key to peace of mind. A stunning fever dream, this one.
