28-09-23 | Image Comics, known for its edgy and controversial comics, has unveiled an unexpected partnership. The leading light in independent comics teams up with toy manufacturer Hasbro to develop a shared universe in which the Transformers will come face-to-face with G.I. Joe, two juggernauts of 1980s pop culture. In the old days Marvel would have been the studio best suited for such ventures, but Hasbro has other ideas. It’s quality storytelling they are concerned with today.
The first issue of Transformers is out next week. It might be the beginning of a new era for the Autobots, but trusty old Optimus Prime is still the main focus. Publisher Robert Kirkman, the man behind The Walking Dead, has assigned writter and illustrator Daniel Warren Johnson to create the first chapter of the Energon Universe. ‘This is a dream project for me, and I’m so glad to be adding a new chapter to the decades long celebration of robots turning into cars. Also, cab-over trucks are so fun to draw!’
Fans of G.I. Joe will have to wait until December to find out what Image makes of Duke, the new origin series which redefines G.I. Joe, Cobra and all the rest. Hasbo has been experimenting with cinematic ventures for a while now and the results are hit and miss. Having a strong comic book series as the foundation for a renewed attempt should prove interesting. What other Hasbro properties might Kirkman utilize in the Energon Universe? Will G.I. Joe team up with M.A.S.K? Will the Transformers take on Battleship? How about Dungeons & Dragons?!
