11-05-23 | The Gremlins are back! HBO Max grants them a new lease of life in the form of an animated series, which premieres later this month. Like the two cult films on which the series is based, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai will follow the story of a young boy who receives a pet Mogwai called Gizmo. Mayhem ensues when the huggable creature starts sprouting evil Gremlins.
Unlike the films, however, the animated series is set in Asia of the 1920s. The longer length and changed setting grant the franchise a fresh approach to the material. Much more so than Gremlins III or a Gremlins remake would have, which have been rumoured to be in the works for years. Joe Dante, director of the original Gremlins films, is actively involved in the production. No guarantee for success, but certainly a good sign.
